How Open Doors Works

Open Doors financial assistance is available to individuals and families seeking access to YMCA memberships and programs who may be unable to pay full rates. Eligibility is determined using a sliding scale based on household income, family size, and special circumstances such as job loss or medical expenses. All applications are reviewed confidentially by YMCA leadership.

Open Doors assistance may be applied to YMCA memberships, swim lessons, youth sports, before and after school care, and other youth and family programs. The goal is to ensure access to programs that support healthy living, youth development, and family stability.

Applicants are asked to provide income verification such as a recent tax return (Form 1040, page 1), the last two paycheck stubs, or other applicable income documentation. These materials help ensure assistance is distributed fairly and responsibly.

You can apply online or pick up an Open Doors application at the Algona Family YMCA. Bring your completed application and required income documentation to the YMCA, where it will be reviewed confidentially by a director. Applications are typically renewed annually after January 1.
